IPSC-style shooting has evolved from its martial origins in the much
the same manner as have track and field, karate, fencing, archery, and similar"
martial arts." IPSC shooting is now an international sport, with its focus
on safety and safe gun handling, accuracy, power, and speed, in events that
range from local matches to major competitions.
The fundamental appeal of the sport lies in the diversity of the courses
of fire. What makes IPSC different from the other more traditional shooting
disciplines is movement by the shooter, drawing from the holster, shooting
at moving targets and at multiple targets, and the fexibility afforded the
individual shooter to solve the problems presented by the stage design.
IPSC-style shooting is a sport and not tactical training. However, the
potential real-life benefits to the competitor are gun-handling skills and
hi-speed shooting accuracy that an individual is unlikely to realize in
any other shooting sport.
Competition and Equipment
IPSC competitors use standard stock handguns as well as exotic custom
guns in IPSC pistol competitions. These guns compete in separate categories.
Scoring depends on both speed and accuracy.
As a new competitor, all you require is a reliable handgun of 9 mm cal.
or greater, two or more magazines, a suitable holster, about 150 rounds of
ammunition, eye and ear protection, an attitude that safety comes first, and
a desire to have some fun. You will be mentored through your first match,
and later if you need or desire it. All levels of skill are welcome. Juniors
are welcome when accompanied by a parent or other responsible adult.
