The Rifle Range and Outdoor Pistol Ranges are now open seven days a week. Closures will not resume until February.

Watch the website for updates.

Sampling Field Activities Suspended until February

There is ~2-3 weeks of field sampling remaining to be done on the large amphitheather across from the rifle and pistol ranges (see figure below with green outline). LATA is doing the final intrustive sampling at depths ranging from 12 to 30 inches. After this sampling is completed, there should be no further impact on the ranges until all the results are analyzed and interpreted. We are unaware of any further range closures required by current land transfer plans and activities.

When work resumes in February, the rifle and outdoor pistol ranges will be closed Monday through Thursday. These ranges will be "fenced off" with control tape. No club members may cross the control tape to either the pistol or rifle ranges without the explicit permission of the LASC President. The shotgun ranges will remain open during this period, as will the indoor range and the archery range . However, only the gate immediately east of the clubhouse will be available for use on the north side of the road. This is so that the lab monitor can be aware of who has entered the LASC premises.

Effectively immediately, keep all the gates locked Monday through Friday. Open the gate, drive in, and lock it behind you. If the gates are left open, the shotgun ranges will be closed Monday through Thursday along with the rifle and pistol ranges. These range closures are necessary because as part of the land transfer process, the State of New Mexico is requiring that samples be taken from three Munitions Impact Sites “downrange” from the Sportsmen’s club.

There are three Munitions Impact Sites “downrange” from the Sportsmen’s club. These were re-mediated more than ten years ago. However, as part of the land transfer process, the State of New Mexico is requiring that samples be taken from these sites. Range closures for the pistol and rifle ranges will be required for two of the sites. One of the impact areas is pictured below. The impact area extends downward from the base of the cliffs across the scree area which is Vee-shaped. Geologists will be taking samples from this area sometime during September. Because this impact area is downrange from the pistol pits, and the access road is downrange from the range range, both the pistol pits and the rifle range will be closed while the geologists are in the field.

Current plans call for field activities to take place Monday through Thursday. The field crews will not be working on Fridays. The rifle and pistol pits will be open all day Friday through Sunday.

Scree area for sampling.
